First, if want to be super swanky stay at the fabulous Jefferson Hotel in downtown Richmond!
Isn't it gorgeous!??

You may recognize the interior from Gone with the Wind!
The hotel is historic and luxurious and extremely conveniently located. From the middle of the city you can visit almost everything quickly!
To get to know the area, I would definitely recommend taking a Segway tour of the city. Richmond was built on 7 hills (like any good British city) so it can be quite a hike to see them all. You see all the good landmarks in Richmond, including Capitol Hill, Hollywood Cemetery, Shockoe Bottom, St. Paul's Church ("Give me Liberty, or Give me death" ring a bell?) and Brown's Island/Canals!
That gets the history out of the way! Next, you should go see a movie at our latest and greatest theater, Movieland! They serve wine and beer and have super fancy projection and seats. It's also the first theater in the city limits to show first run movies in 50 years!
While you're on the Boulevard, have some fabulous Buz and Ned's barbecue! They threw down with Bobby Flay and kicked butt! Just know that you're going there for the BBQ and not the ambiance. :)
Then head down the street to Carytown for some great local shopping!
I can't even pick any favorite stores, because there's something for everyone! I just hope you can parallel park. Seriously. My last recommendation would be to grab a slice of pizza at Bottom's Up in Shockoe bottom. The Karen Combo is my favorite! Then see a live show at Toad's Place or Canal Club down the street.
What would you recommend in your hometown?
