We wanted to paint it as soon as we moved in, but didn't want to regret our rushed decision later so we held off. I think it's time to paint, what do you think?

what about painting the brick but staining the mantel??
i say paint it white and then paint the mantle another color (or stain like ashley said)... our fireplace is painted white and i love it - brightened the entire space up. :) you could paint the mantel the brown that is in your rug.
